Neste Oil commits to using solely certified palm oil by the end of
2015
Neste Oil is committed to using solely certified palm oil as and when
sufficient volumes become available. The company believes that this
will be possible by the end of 2015 if the positive trend in
certification continues.
Palm oil is one of the feedstocks used in producing Neste Oil's
NExBTL renewable diesel, which is the cleanest diesel fuel on the
market today. The company recently received its first cargo (5,000
tons) of palm oil from sources certified using a mass balance supply
chain model. Neste Oil expects to use at least 50,000 tons of
certified palm oil this year, and projects that this figure will rise
rapidly in subsequent years.

for biofuel production. We require our palm oil suppliers to be
members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and commit
to sustainability and continuous development," says Executive Vice

The RSPO is an organization that brings together palm oil producers,
users, and NGOs in the interests of promoting the production of
sustainable palm oil.

forerunner, Neste Oil is putting a lot of effort into establishing

NExBTL renewable diesel offers 40-80% lower greenhouse gas emissions
compared to the best fossil diesel fuels, depending on the feedstock
used. The NExBTL process is flexible in terms of feedstock and can
use a wide variety of different vegetable oils and waste animal fat
sourced from the food industry.
Neste Oil's R&D is focused on developing new industrial-scale
renewable raw materials with good GHG-saving potential, such as
algae, other microbes, and wood residues. Projects in these areas are
under way with over 20 research communities worldwide.
The use of biofuels is expected to rise significantly during the next
few years. The European target for renewable energy in transport
fuels will increase to 10% in 2020. Sustainably produced biofuels
will play a significant role in reducing emissions generated by
traffic and transport in Europe.

NExBTL renewable diesel
NExBTL technology is a proprietary process developed by Neste Oil for
producing diesel fuel from renewable raw materials with a chemical
structure equivalent to that of fossil diesel. The process enables
properties such as cetane number and cold-temperature performance to
be adjusted to meet different needs, while guaranteeing an aromatics-
and sulfur-free fuel that is of higher quality than fossil diesel.
NExBTL renewable diesel is compatible with all diesel engines and all
current fuel distribution and logistics systems.
Studies on the entire lifecycle of the product have shown that, when
produced from sustainable raw materials, NExBTL renewable diesel
offers 40-80% lower greenhouse gas emissions than the best fossil
diesel fuel. Extensive trials have shown that NExBTL also reduces
tailpipe emissions of particulates and NOx significantly compared to
conventional diesel fuel, thereby benefiting air quality.
RSPO-certified palm oil
The palm oil certification system was created at the end of 2007 by
the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, an organization that brings
together palm oil producers, users, and NGOs in the interests of
promoting sustainable palm oil production. Certification of oil palm
plantations started last year. The RSPO certification system is
developing rapidly and has gained wide acceptance. The RSPO has been
instrumental in establishing a set of common ground rules for
producers and users of sustainable palm oil. Neste Oil was the first
oil company to become a member of the RSPO and is a strong supporter
