The Secret Annex Online chosen as Site of the Day on Favourite Website Awards
Today, on the birth date of Anne Frank, The Secret Annex Online will feature as
the Site of the Day on the website of the FWA (Favourite Website Awards). The
Secret Annex Online achieved this by the votes of regular visitors to the FWA
site as well as professionals from the online sector. The fact that Site of the
Day coincides with the day Anne Frank was born makes the award even more
special.
The Secret Annex Online is a 3D version of the Amsterdam house where Anne Frank
went into hiding during World War Two. The three-dimensional online environment
allows visitors to explore the house and the secret annex as they were during
the hiding period. Events during this period are told in a series of stories
based on Anne Frank's Diary and other witness accounts. The museum in Amsterdam
is not furnished as the secret annex was cleared of its contents after those in
hiding were arrested. After the war, it was Otto Frank's wish that the rooms
should remain empty. The online hiding place allows visitors to see and learn
more about various objects not on view. The virtual rooms were furnished using
reference photographs that were taken in 1999 when the front part of the house
and the secret annex were temporarily re-furnished. Dutch Television network
company AVRO TV made unique footage available which was shown online for the
first time on The Secret Annex Online. In these fragments, the helpers reflect
on the war years and talk about their roles in helping Anne Frank and the people
living in hiding.
The Secret Annex Online was not only chosen as the FWA's Site of the Day, but
is also the web pick of the week on American portal Commarts, a popular platform
for innovative arts and culture projects.
