EURid boosts security for .eu domain names
Brussels, 21 June 2010 - EURid, the registry for the .eu top-level domain, is
proud to announce it has implemented Domain Name System Security Extensions
(DNSSEC), the latest Internet standard, while maintaining almost immediate
availability of newly registered domain names.
DNSSEC is a protocol that verifies and validates name server responses from the
bottom up through a chain of trust, thereby making the domain name system more
secure. It can prevent hackers from intercepting web traffic and redirecting it
to fake websites that can trick people into supplying personal information, such
as a counterfeit Internet banking site that looks like the real thing.
"At this time, few top-level domain registries support DNSSEC, but we encourage
all in the community to help Internet users by embracing this protocol,"
comments Marc Van Wesemael, EURid's General Manager. He also noted that the
DNSSEC protocol is an important achievement for EURid, which is constantly
striving to improve the security of the domain names it administers.
The .eu registry worked closely with some of its accredited registrars to
implement DNSSEC, including Larsen Data ApS from Copenhagen. "We are glad to
be one of the first registrars to be able to offer .eu domain names signed with
the DNSSEC technology," comments Peter Larsen, CEO of Larsen Data ApS, one of
the five registrars that have already signed at least one domain name.
"It was important for us to work closely with our registrars to find the best
way to launch DNSSEC together, in order to benefit .eu users," says Marc Van
Wesemael.
The .eu zone was signed on 15 June 2010. As soon as the root zone is fully
DNSSEC-compliant (provisional timeline: 15 July), the chain of trust will be
complete.
