Neste Oil has increased its use of waste- and residue-based renewable inputs by over 400,000 tons

Neste Oil Corporation Press Release 5 February 2013 at 10 a.m. (EET) Neste Oil has increased its use of waste- and residue-based renewable inputs by over 400,000 tons Neste Oil succeeded in achieving its target of increasing its use of waste and residue raw materials for refining into renewable fuels by many hundreds of thousands of tons in 2012. A total of 742,000 tons of these raw materials were used compared to 330,000 tons in 2011. Neste Oil increased its use of waste animal fat in particular last year and added waste fat from the fish processing industry to its feedstock base. Europe's first pilot plant for producing waste-based microbial oil was also commissioned at Neste Oil's Technology Center at Porvoo last year. "I am proud that we have succeeded in increasing our use of waste and residues and extended our feedstock base in line with our targets. Neste Oil is the world's largest supplier of renewable diesel today and the largest producer of renewable fuels from waste and residues. The amount of renewable diesel that Neste Oil produces from waste and residues today is equivalent to the annual fuel consumption of 740,000 cars", says Matti Lehmus, Executive Vice President, Oil Products and Renewables. Neste Oil used a total of 2.1 million tons of renewable inputs in 2012, of which palm oil accounted for 65%, waste and residues for 35%, and other vegetable oils under 0.5%. Neste Oil's total feedstock use last year increased compared to 2011, as all four of the company's NExBTL plants were fully operational throughout the year. Sustainably produced palm oil is currently the single largest input used by Neste Oil for producing renewable diesel, based on its availability, price, and certifiability. In line with its strategy, Neste Oil is continuing efforts to further extend its feedstock base and increase its use of waste and residues. Nonfood raw materials are a particular focus of R&D attention, together with materials that help reduce the amount of land used in energy production and cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly. All of the renewable inputs used by Neste Oil are 100% traced All the renewable inputs used by Neste Oil can be traced back to the plantations and production sites from which they come. They also meet the strict sustainability criteria set out in EU biofuel legislation, which forbid forests, wetlands, peat bogs, and areas with high levels of biodiversity from being cleared for biofuel-related purposes. Neste Oil's supply chain is monitored through regular independent third-party audits to ensure compliance. 77% of all the raw materials used by Neste Oil to produce renewable fuels were certified in 2012. Neste Oil has increased its use of certified raw materials systematically over the last few years (29% in 2010 and 49% in 2011). 91% of the palm oil used in 2012 was certified, compared to 83% in 2011. Neste Oil's target is that all the palm oil it uses will be certified by the end of 2015. Neste Oil currently sources palm oil from Malaysia and Indonesia.
